Drain Pipe Slope Calculator
Drain slope is treated as a minimum to be exceeded, and it is not. Below a quarter inch per foot the flow will not carry solids and the line silts up. Above about half an inch per foot the water runs away and leaves the solids behind, which blocks the line just as effectively and further from anywhere you can reach. This calculator gives the total fall over your run — the number that decides whether the pipe still clears the sewer at the far end — and checks the grade against both limits.

Below that they settle; well above it they get left behind as the water accelerates away. Both failures look identical from the fixture end.

- One at the upstream end A cleanout is required at intervals along a long horizontal run and where the direction changes by more than an aggregate of 135 degrees. They cost almost nothing while the trench is open and are the difference between a twenty minute clearance and excavation.

- 3.00" per 12 ft A useful field check: at a quarter inch per foot a run falls three inches every twelve feet, which is one full pipe diameter on a 3 inch line. Sighting along the pipe against a level line catches gross errors that a torpedo level on a single joint will not.
What slope is for
A drain is not full of water. It carries a stream running along the bottom of a mostly empty pipe, and that stream has to move fast enough to keep solids suspended and to scour the pipe wall behind it. The conventional target is around two feet per second.
Too little grade and the velocity falls below that. Solids settle where they stop, the deposit narrows the pipe, the velocity falls further, and the line silts up progressively from the upstream end.
Too much grade and the water accelerates, thins out, and separates from the solids it was carrying. The liquid reaches the far end and the solids sit where the water left them. The blockage that results is usually a long way from the fixture that reported it.
This is why the trade treats a quarter inch per foot as a target rather than a floor, and why plumbers are wary of runs that drop faster than half an inch per foot. Where a drain genuinely has to lose height, the answer is a vertical drop followed by a normal grade, not a steep run.
Why big pipe gets a gentler minimum
The code minimum is a quarter inch per foot for pipe up to two and a half inches, and an eighth of an inch per foot for three inch and larger. It looks like a concession to the difficulty of grading a long large-diameter run, and it is not.
Velocity in a partly full pipe depends on the depth of flow as well as the slope. The same discharge in a larger pipe runs deeper relative to the pipe wall friction it encounters, so it maintains scouring velocity at a gentler grade.
The mistake is applying the relaxed figure to smaller pipe because it is easier to achieve. A two inch line at an eighth of an inch per foot does not carry, and it is a common cause of a branch that blocks repeatedly while the main it feeds is fine.
The relaxation is a permission, not a recommendation. A three inch line at a quarter inch per foot works better than the same line at an eighth, where the fall is available.
Fall is the number that surprises people
A quarter inch per foot sounds negligible until it is multiplied by the length of the run. Forty feet is ten inches. Eighty feet is twenty inches, which is more than most people picture when they imagine a drain running level-ish across a crawl space.
That total governs the whole job. It decides whether the pipe still clears the top of the sewer or septic inlet at the far end, whether it passes under a footing rather than through it, and whether it stays below the frost line all the way.
Discovering it during excavation is expensive. Discovering it after the concrete is poured is worse. The calculation takes a moment and it is worth doing before any of the levels are fixed.
When the fall is not available over the distance, the options are a larger pipe at the reduced minimum grade, a rearranged route, or a pump. None of them is improved by finding out late.
