Mini Split Sizing Calculator
Every guide warns against oversizing air conditioning. With a mini split the penalty is worse, because the whole point of an inverter is that it can turn down and run continuously at low output. A head chosen larger than the room needs cannot go below about a third of its nameplate, so it cycles on and off exactly like the fixed-speed unit it was supposed to replace — and it leaves the room cold and damp instead of cool and dry. This calculator checks the head against the load in both directions, checks the combination ratio if there are several heads on one outdoor unit, and shows what the heating capacity actually becomes on the coldest day of your year.

- Minimum modulated output
- 4,000 BTU/hr An inverter head cannot run below roughly a third of its nameplate. This is the number that decides whether the unit modulates or cycles, and it appears in the submittal rather than on the box.
- Oversizing
- +50% On a conventional system this would only mean shorter cycles. On an inverter it means the compressor sits at its floor, never modulates, and removes far less humidity than a correctly sized unit. You paid for variable capacity and disabled it.
- Combination ratio
- 120% Heads total 36,000 BTU/hr against a 30,000 BTU/hr outdoor unit. Modest oversubscription is normal and intended — zones rarely peak simultaneously.
- Heating capacity at 20 °F
- 7,680 BTU/hr Nameplate capacity is measured at 47 °F. A standard model falls to about 64% at this temperature — the single biggest reason a system sized on cooling leaves a room cold in January.
- Heating load at design temperature
- 14,300 BTU/hr Short by 6,620 BTU/hr on the coldest days. Either move up to a cold-climate model, choose a larger head and accept the cooling penalty, or plan supplementary heat.

Oversizing costs you the feature you bought
A conventional air conditioner has one speed. It runs until the thermostat is satisfied and stops. Oversize it and the cycles get shorter, which wastes energy and leaves humidity high, but the machine is behaving normally.
An inverter mini split is different in kind. Its compressor varies speed, so on a mild day it can settle at a low output and run for hours, holding temperature steadily and pulling moisture out of the air the whole time. That continuous low-output operation is where the efficiency numbers come from and where the comfort comes from.
The catch is that it has a floor. Published minimum outputs sit around a third of nameplate — a nine thousand BTU head typically bottoms out near three thousand. If the room only needs two and a half thousand, the head cannot get there, so it runs at three thousand until the room overshoots and then shuts off. The variable speed compressor is now doing a fixed-speed job.
This is why the usual instinct to round up is wrong here. A head one size too small runs flat out on the hottest afternoon of the year and holds temperature the rest of the time. A head two sizes too large never modulates at all.
Multi-zone systems have a second constraint
When several indoor heads share one outdoor unit, their nameplate capacities usually add up to more than the outdoor unit provides. The ratio between the two is the combination ratio, and manufacturers publish a permitted range for it.
Some oversubscription is intended and sensible. Bedrooms peak at night, a west-facing living room peaks in the late afternoon, and a home office peaks at midday. Sizing the outdoor unit for the sum of every peak would leave it enormously oversized for the way the house is actually used.
Beyond the published limit the behaviour changes. On a design day with every zone calling, the outdoor unit runs out of capacity and the zones share what there is. A small bedroom might do fine on a fraction of nameplate; the room with the glass wall will not.
The opposite problem exists at the other end. A large outdoor unit with one small zone calling may not be able to throttle low enough, which brings back the cycling problem at system level rather than head level. Single-zone systems avoid both traps, which is one reason installers often prefer several single-zone systems over one multi-zone.
The nameplate is a summer number
Heat pump capacity is rated at forty-seven degrees Fahrenheit outdoors. That is a mild autumn day, not a design condition, and it is the number printed on the box.
A standard model loses capacity steadily as it gets colder, because there is less heat in the outdoor air to move and the refrigerant cycle has to work harder to move it. By seventeen degrees a typical unit is at around sixty percent of its rating, and near zero it may be under half.
Cold-climate models are built for this, with larger compressors, vapour injection or flash tank designs that hold rated capacity well below freezing. They cost more and they are the difference between a system that heats a northern house and one that hands the job to backup heat every January.
The practical consequence is that a system sized on cooling load is very likely undersized for heating in any climate with a real winter, because cooling load and heating load are different numbers and the machine that meets one may not meet the other. Size for whichever is binding, check the extended capacity table in the submittal, and plan supplementary heat if the numbers do not meet.

Should I use one multi-zone system or several single-zone ones?
Several single-zone systems avoid both combination-ratio problems and give each room its own correctly matched compressor, at the cost of more outdoor units and more wall penetrations. Multi-zone is tidier and often cheaper, but it needs the ratio checked and it turns down less gracefully when only one zone is calling.
