The five ratings, and which one stops you first
Towing is governed by five separate limits, and a rig can satisfy four of them while violating the fifth. They are not interchangeable and none of them is "the tow rating".
GCWR limits the truck and trailer together. GVWR limits the loaded truck alone, including tongue weight. GAWR limits each axle individually. Payload limits occupants and cargo, and tongue weight counts as cargo. The hitch receiver has its own rating, often lower than the vehicle it is bolted to.
On a modern half-ton pickup, payload runs out first almost every time. Manufacturers advertise tow ratings calculated with a single 150 pound driver and nothing else aboard, so adding a family, a cooler and a toolbox consumes several hundred pounds before the trailer is connected.
Three-quarter and one-ton trucks shift the binding constraint toward GCWR, because their payload capacity grows faster than their engine and cooling capacity. That is the real reason people move up a class — not the engine, the sticker.
Why dry weight is the wrong number
Trailer brochures advertise dry weight, sometimes called unloaded vehicle weight, and it is close to meaningless for planning.
It excludes propane, fresh water, batteries and any dealer-installed option. A travel trailer with two full propane tanks, a 40 gallon fresh tank and two batteries carries roughly 500 pounds that the brochure does not mention, before the owner puts anything inside.
Then comes cargo. Bedding, cookware, tools, chairs, food and clothing routinely add another 500 to 1,500 pounds in a family trailer. The figure that matters is GVWR — what the trailer weighs fully loaded — or better, a scale reading.
The practical rule used widely in the RV community is to plan against the trailer’s GVWR rather than its dry weight. If the rig works at GVWR it will work in every real configuration; if it only works at dry weight it does not work at all.
What the numbers do not capture
Every limit on this page is a static weight rating. Several of the things that make towing difficult are not weights at all.
Frontal area matters more than mass at highway speed. A tall box trailer at 6,000 pounds is considerably harder to pull and stop than a flat car hauler at the same weight, and most manufacturers publish a maximum frontal area alongside the tow rating for this reason.
Grade and altitude reduce available power without changing any rating. A naturally aspirated engine loses roughly three percent of its output per thousand feet of elevation, so a rig that tows comfortably at sea level can struggle badly in mountains at the same weight.
Brakes are the limit people discover last. Trailer brakes are required above a threshold that varies by state, commonly 3,000 pounds, and a controller that is set up badly or a breakaway that has never been tested makes the whole calculation academic.
Finally, none of this addresses whether the driver has towed before. The most common cause of trailer incidents is not overloading — it is speed.

Why does tongue weight count against payload?
Because it physically rests on the tow vehicle. The hitch transfers 10 to 15% of the trailer’s weight onto the truck’s rear axle, where it is indistinguishable from cargo in the bed. Your GVWR does not care where the weight came from.
My truck is rated to tow 11,000 lb — why does this say less?
Advertised tow ratings are calculated with a driver of about 150 lb and no other load. Add passengers, a toolbox and a tongue weight and the payload disappears fast. The advertised figure is a ceiling under ideal conditions, not a number you can plan around.
What is the difference between GVWR and GCWR?
GVWR limits the tow vehicle alone, fully loaded including tongue weight. GCWR limits the vehicle and trailer together. You have to satisfy both, and on modern half-tons the GVWR is usually reached first.
What happens if tongue weight is too low?
Below about 10% the trailer becomes unstable and can begin to sway at highway speed, which is difficult to recover from. Too little tongue weight is more dangerous than slightly too much — load heavy items ahead of the trailer axle.
Does a weight distribution hitch increase capacity?
It redistributes tongue weight across the axles and improves handling, and many manufacturers require one above a threshold. It does not raise your GVWR, GCWR or payload — those are fixed ratings.
